Climate Addaptive City
Nieuwe Mark Breda . The Netherlands
A planting plan
For this project, Andrew van Egmond was asked to develop a planting plan and narrative visualizations that translate and enhance the key themes underlying this redevelopment.
Together with the municipality, Donald Marskamp from Studio Mars, and Laurens de Boer, I worked with great pleasure on phase 1 of this project and have also been invited to work on phase 2 of this exciting development.
The main theme of this plan is climate adaptability. This encompasses a variety of aspects. Think of supporting biodiversity, bringing nature deep into the city, using shaded greenery to create spaces for people to gather, but most importantly, cooling the city and supporting the ecosystem. In short, it’s about creating a healthy living environment for humans, animals, and plants, right in the heart of the city, while also acting as a buffer against extreme temperatures and contributing to water retention.
In developing the planting plan, we aimed for strong diversity, with a foundation of native plant communities that are native to the upstream and downstream areas of the Mark River, complemented by a rich selection of cultivated, flowering plants that are both visually appealing and support biodiversity.
